Humane Restraint
2014
Two-channel video installation with audio in a corner of a room
“Humane restraint” is a two-channel video installation with audio installed in a corner of a space. This piece was created using only specialized training video materials from the National Institute of Corrections and from "Humane Restraint", a company that manufactures restraints for mental hospitals and prisons. The source materials currently distributed are targeted to the employees in the corrections and mental health industries.
This is an accumulation that speaks beyond its own words on a subject larger than the topic of restraints in the United States. These materials have a unifying set of cognitive slippages, whereby humans are classified and alienated, and restraint systems are backed by the systems of control manifested in a restrictive architectural environment.
